2. What does music mean to you? What are your favourite singers, bands and why?

Music can be someone’s hobby, profession or a part of the lifestyle. If you like classical music, you can enjoy a concert of a philharmonic orchestra in a concert hall or attend a festival. Opera lovers can choose from a list of opera performances in a theatre or opera house. Fans of different music styles - pop, rock, jazz, blues or country can enjoy the music at music festivals, concerts or simply listen to CDs. There are also people, who like folklore music. Folklore groups dressed in traditional costumes dance at folklore festivals from which the most famous is the one held in July in Východná.

3. What does literature include and what role does it have in your life?

Literature includes lyrics, poems, fairy tales, novels, plays, short stories.. Reading literature builds the range of our vocabulary and it also teaches us using language in an appropriate way with number of usefull expressions. It can teach us moral behaviour, it often distinguishes between good and bad heroes.

      In summer people like going to open-air cinemas. The best actors and actresses are awarded a prize for their achievements. The world-known award is           the main national film award in the USA called Oscar.

6. What do you know about theatres?

Going to the theatre is a social event for most people. Keen theatregoers, rarely teenagers or younger ones, can enjoy various types of theatre performances and usually choose the performance they want to see according to its director and cast. The best-known theatre in Slovakia is The National Theatre in Bratislava and there are theatres in almost all bigger towns in our country.

7. What is the difference between towns and villages as for cultural events?

       If you live in a small town or village, you don’t have such a good choice as there aren’t many cultural facilities. The only cultural event is a disco or a ball            which are held on special occasions several times a year. When people living in a village want to see a good film or theatre performance, they have to go          to the nearest town which can be expensive and time consuming. The only choice for them is television, videos and possibly DVDs  which are a bit cheaper        and more convenient. Cultural events in the countryside are not that frequent. People who live in villages all their lives prefer gardening, visiting friends or        watching TV.

  1. What does the word „job“ mean?

Today we live in a world which is influenced by money. We need money for living, for buying all necessary things. The best way is to find a job, that means working to earn money. Everyone  needs to find a job, where he can show his knowledge, talent and experience. It is very important to find the right job, because we spend one third of the day at work.

 

  1. Why is having a job so important?

Having a job is essential for earning enough money to buy everything what we need and have a satisfying standard of living.

 

  1. How can one find a job?

We have a lot of possibilities how to find a job. We can go through the job advertisements in newspapers or surf the Internet. We can go to a job centre and ask for help. If we find a job advertisement we need to contact our future employer and find out if the position is still free. We can contact him by post, telephone, fax or e-mail. If the position is still free, we need to write a CV and an application for a job. In CV we should include our personal data, information about our education, qualifications and our special skills. Then we should send the CV with a cover letter (a letter that offers more detailed information about us) to our potential employer. If he contacts us, we should prepare for a job interview. If it is successful we have found a job.

 

  1. How should you dress if you go to a job interview? How should you behave?

We should wear nice clothes. A shirt, tie and trousers if you are a man and a nice blouse with a skirt or a dress if you are a woman. We should look neat and smart.

To make a good impression, you should come on time, you should show that you are open-minded and you want to learn all you can. You should be willing to help in whatever way. You should smile and be friendly.

 

  1. What is the difference between manual and mental/intellectual work?

Manual jobs are physically demanding. These are jobs like builders, bricklayers or firemen. Mental work isn’t physically demanding but it requires special qualifications and experience. These are jobs like lawyers, doctors or economists. To do these jobs you need to have higher education (university or college).

 

  1. What is the difference between a full time and a part time job?

       Working full time means working 8 hours each day of the week. A part     time job means that you work less hours a day or not every day, usually 

       at times  that fit you best.

 

  1. What does unemployment mean?

The number of people in a country who don´t have a job and who search for work. The unemployment rate is the lowest in Bratislava region and the highest in the eastern parts of the country.

 

 

  1. Who takes the maternity leave and when?

When a baby is born to a couple, it is usually the mother who takes maternity leave. In Slovakia it takes three years. The maternity pay is not very high in our country, so the man is often responsible to earn the whole family income. When the child grows up, he/she goes to nursery school and the woman can return back to work. Sometimes it is more convenient when men take the maternity leave and women remain at work- it´s also possible.

 

  1. What happens when someone gets retired?

After reaching a certain age people retire. It means, they stop working but still they are paid some money- a pension. The retirement age in Slovakia is now ....... years but if people want, they can take early retirement.

 

  1. Describe what these people do and what qualities they should have?

Doctors, teachers, tailors, showmen, firemen.

  1.  What qualities, skills and character features are necessary to find a good job?

A job applicant should show his interest in work, reliability, responsibility, creativity, ability to work in team or overtime. It is necessary to have specific qualifications- appropriate education and certificates. The advantage is when you can speak some foreign languages, when you are communicative, when you can use a computer, when you can type or when you are skilled in any other required way.
