LEISURE TIME AND INTERESTS

1. What is leisure time?

In other words it´s free time, time for fun and entertainment after work or study. People spend their leisure time practising hobbies.

2. What are typical hobbies?

A lot of people collect different kinds of objects like stamps, badges, postcards, flags, coins.. They meet other collectors and exchange the things. Teenagers most often spend their time doing sports, football, basketball, roller-skating, skateboarding, swimming, cycling or skiing in winter. Some prefer staying at home and they listen to music, browse the Internet or chat with friends. Some parents force their children to play a musical instrument or do some sport because they think they will prevent them from taking drugs or drinking alcohol. Older people enjoy gardening, fishing, hunting, reading, going to the theatre, concerts or art exhibitions.

A lot of people keep a pet- a dog, a cat, a goldfish, a parrot, a guinea pig, a spider, a turtle. Taking care of an animal requires much time and knowledge.

3. Can you name some hobbies which help people keep fit?

There are some outdoor and indoor activities which people practise to keep fit. Outdoor activities include hiking, cycling, jogging, walking, diving, skiing and many others. Indoor activities include bodybuilding, doing aerobics, karate, dancing and so on. Nowadays a lot of people do some sports to have a healthy lifestyle.

4. Can you name some dangerous hobbies?

Some people are fans of very special and expensive sports like hot-air ballooning, skydiving, hang-gliding which depend on stable weather conditions. If the weather changes, it can cause problems. These sports require much experience.

In summer people can go yachting or scuba diving but they have to travel abroad because Slovaks have no sea.
