HOUSING

1. Compare life in towns and cities to life in villages.

Living in towns and cities has advantages and disadvantages, too. On one hand there are more job opportunities, better schools, shops, services, sports facilities, richer social life, number of cultural events, such as operas, concerts and theatre performances. People can go out to cafés, pubs or clubs. Larger towns have big shopping malls where everything can be bought under one roof. On the other hand, towns are much more polluted than villages, they are noisy, crowded, dangerous especially for children not only because of high traffic but also because housing estates are a good place for criminals and drug dealers. A few years ago people used to prefer life in towns because it was more comfortable but nowadays when shops are full of low quality food, some people tend to move back to vilages where they can grow their own vegetables and fruits and keep domestic animals like hens, rabbits, ducks or geese. Life in villages is not only healthier but also less private because people know each other very well but probably also  friendlier because people have closer relationships among themselves.

2. How do Slovaks live?

A lot of Slovaks live in block of flats, which is a large building where there are number of flats placed on storeys or floors. Eacg flat has a kitchen, a bathroom a toilet and some rooms, usually a bedroom, a living room and a room for children. Some flats have a balcony. In big towns wealthy people only can build their own flats because it is very expensive.  Many of us have  grandparents living in nearby villages. They have a house with a garden, they grow fruit trees, vegetables and keep animals. If young people don´t have enough money to live on their own, they can live with their parents or they can borrow some money from banks. This money is called a mortgage.

If some people don´t have a house or a place to stay, they are called homeless. Homelessness is a serious social problem which should be solved by the governments.
